Day 6

You have a speaking God

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them,

and they follow me.” -John 10:27

For a relationship to thrive in a healthy way, it requires more than just one side doing all the talking and receiving! God loves it when you pray, and he loves giving good gifts to you (Ps 31:19), but God is trying to speak to you too! He wants to speak truth to you, so that you can be free from the things that use to harm you. He speaks through His word (the Bible), He speaks through other believers and through people He has especially chosen to be messengers and  teachers - like pastors (Eph 4:11-13). God speaks through creation and nature, and He speaks inwardly with a still small voice. (1Kings 19:11-13). God speaks in many more ways as well, but a good place to start listening to God is through reading your Bible and asking God to open the ‘eyes of your heart’ (Eph 1:18). You need the power of His Holy Spirit to make His word come alive to you (Hebrews 4:12). As you read God’s word, highlight the verses that speak especially to you. You can also practice and learn how to listen to God as you pray, this is called listening prayer. Talk to God and then stop to ask Him if there are things He wants to say to you. Ask Him to give you ‘ears to hear’ His voice (Mark 4:9). His word says that His people will hear and know His voice (John 10:27). It’s important to know that God will never say anything to you that is contrary (or goes against) what He’s already said in scripture. If you think God is telling you that He doesn’t love you, or that you’re no longer His child because you’ve made a mistake… then that is not God’s voice talking. It may take some time to learn how to hear God rightly, sometimes our old way of thinking is like a dirty lens that gets in the way of us seeing things clearly.  The more time you spend reading God’s word, the more understanding God will give you. He will wash you in the water of His word (Eph 5:26). As you’re learning, ask lots of questions! God is not threatened by your questions or doubts. Read, learn and discover His truth. As you ask questions you will come to find that He hides in every answer. He is the answer and the hope for you and me.

“To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.” - Matthew 13:12

Prayer - God, I want to hear You when You speak. I ask that your Spirit that is living inside of me would make Your word alive to me. I ask that You would speak loud and clear to my heart, and that you would enable me to listen and hear you rightly. I want to know everything you want to tell me, Amen.
